Signage, 2021

Signage was conceived as a continuation of the project for Carrier 2020 for the publication "On Failure" which is the last part of the project initiated, produced and curated by Ruth Aitken and James Lee as a part of their artistic, curatorial and research project F.U.C(&K). Within the publication diffferent artist respond visually to how they work with failure as a tool in their artistic practice.

Within this project i focused on words, language, and the meaning that we carry within them. But how can I--and indeed anyone--know that the message wrapped in words will arrive to a receiver unharmed? This question is further complicated if one makes a visual work based on something concrete and specific to amplify and communicate one meaning--although it seldom does. But as a practice in failure i made sculptures made up of an alphabet that was meant to translate my hand movements into concrete messages. It failed, in words and action, but something visual remains, a meaning, a failure, that perhaps speaks louder than words.

Below follows the text that was presented in connection with the visual works:

"Words become the messages that we traverse an empty space with. From me as sender to someone as a receiver

Within that space, or through it, a translation occurs, where shapes are bent out of shape and form and fail at communicating what is sent.

Any sending, and return, of love and failure—as examples—will never be an equal exchange until it can transcend the agreed upon, and be able to communicate one's own shape unchanged, and leave it uncomfortable in the others hand, so that that person sees and receives my attempt, but is left baffled and confused.

As I will be baffled and confused by your shapes in return.

And so we continue until every minute detail has been converted to shape and form and make up one shape as strange and familiar as possibility allows.

A shape which is a message, sign, and a returned favour in failure."
