In my contribution to the inaugural edition of Metode, with the theme of surface, I began to reimagine not only the surface as an interface, but word and meanings themselves. Connectedness is perhaps a keyword, movement another, how do we actually navigate through a world that promises you access through your fingertips, and how can history unfolds in such a space.

Instead of replying on my usual suspects, the written word on a page that can be followed logically and automatically I wanted to create something a kin to the way information is spread, understood and manufactured. If words and sentences stop being a flow that one controls, and becomes a multitude of streams flowing past, in between and through you, where is the surface, and where do we begin to understand the interconnectedness of different meanings.

From the website of Metode:

"Being directed to the surface is intellectually nearly taboo" writes Sybille Krämer in her essay for Metode. Tim Ingold writes in his Metode essay that the surface is perhaps the very place where meaning is generated.

Throughout the autumn of 2022, 13 Norwegian and international researchers, curators, artists and architects have met at ROM for kunst og arkitkektur and online to explore the status of the surface in our time. Metode vol. 1 'Deep Surface' consists of fourteen experimental essays written by Andreas Ervik, Beatrice Zaidenberg, Neda Genova, Marius Moldvær, Severino Alfonso, Loukia Tsafoulia, Jenny Perlin, Adam Hudec, Julie Barfod, Jakob Oredsson, Nick Walkley, and Benjamin Blackwell. Together with Tim Ingold, Sybille Krämer, and Metode's editorial board, the participants have developed the essays through open peer-review feedback, co-writing, critical readings, and the exchange of ideas and experiences.
